Pictures add so much to articles, but there are times when they subtract as well. Take a look to agree or disagree or form another opinion in the middle too.
The size of the article makes a big difference when adding pictures. If there is lots to say in the article, the pictures might be considered if they are small. Once a large picture is posted on an article, the views might be fewer since more pages on the screen are needed to get the words and photos on there together. There are times when a reader wants to see the detail in words without overwhelming pictures.
If material has more pictures than writing or explanation, the pictures make it more visual than a written article. If a caption under each suffices, your article needs fewer statements because the photographs say most of the thoughts you want to get across.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so can make things easier to understand by showing an example. There are far more lookers than there are readers. If you want to test that theory, just put a surprise somewhere in your written material and see how many people actually read an article.
I personally enjoy a good read without interferences of pictures. It is not that I don’t like pictures, but I have one in my mind as I read an article, so need very little visual assistance. If the article is supposed to be mostly visual, then the words should be few. They won’t distract from the view as the author is focusing on what you want to highlight.
Just adding pictures to put them on the screen does nothing for the article unless they are appropriate, well detailed and in proportion to the article too. Quality pics are great to the viewer, yet poorly captured pics leave the person looking wishing they did not have to comment on the article. Those words typed either have to be dishonest and say nice things or down grade the poor photo given online with honest comment.
Length does not sell, unless there is a need to list many valuable pieces of the article. If there it is necessary to list a lot like ” 13 tips for a Peaches and Cream Complexion of the Face” published by this author on December 2, 2008 the article could be brief and does not need any pictures. This author also posted “20 ways to Remain Calm and be Prepared in any Situation” on December 6, 2008 which is another example of a longer article being necessary and not using any photos. “16 Strategic Budgeting Ideas” composed by Goodselfme on December 4, 2008 fits on one page with advertisements for easy reading. “20 Unusual Marriage Proposals” written by this author on December 7, 2008 has only those 20 ideas listed with very little other words and no pictures at all in that article. The words say it without the need for photographs.
Consider your article and your writing before you add pictures so they go together well and compliment each other.

I always wondered about pictues on articles or of any kind. I’m starting to add more pictures, but I agree it needs to be the right one in order to compliment the other. Exceptional!

Great article. I think some people like the visual of a photo while others don’t care for them. Photos that may be important are ones that show the reader a place or item they are describing. As a writer, finding good, free photos to use can be difficult, though.

I usually like to add one picture to my articles. I believe it adds to the article, not subtracts.I agree, it does depend a lot on the type of article though. People are often quite rushed and even though it is the words that are most important (quality), sometimes unless people can see instantly what the topic of the article is about (if the title is a bit ambiguous) they won’t read on. A picture can also help create the mood of the article. Great topic. Well done!

I think it add attraction to your article

Picture do give a visual break and add some interest.Too many pictures overwhelms the article unless it’s a how to post. Balance is important. Keep it up.

I in general add pictures to my articles wherever necessary as I feel they add more value to the articles.

I agree with you , pictures add a lot but you need to put them in the right order. thanks

Personally I enjoy looking at the pictures unless they make the whole article too long, as you say. I usually like to add one to the beginning of a poem. I think a lot of it is personal preference.

Good share!!.. ^^

If it adds to the article or compliments it, it is great. But if the article is compelling in itself, then the picture distracts, as you mentioned.A picture, however remains optional.

Pictures add flavor to an article if its necessary but if not…. It can only sabotage the whole write. Good post ma’am!

like to add pictures but i do think of their relevance before adding them in. I think they break up the text and make the article more appealing, in every way

Nice Share.

I’m still experimenting with adding pics, and I tend to try to include my art as much as possible, just to create interest.

very nice observation. you have given us a nicer view in creating posts.

Nice Post……
thanks for share.

As the old proverb says “a picture is worth a hundred words”, but of course it depends on the subject. Great discussion, thank you.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 am
I agree with all of your article and perhaps that’s what makes your articles really good, you have found the balance. Pictures should not be used to compensate for something else but are quite useful when used appropriately. With your articles I remember the text which is what matters most. Thanks for sharing.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:43 am
It depends much on the nature of the article.
September 28th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I personally like to add pics in my articles. Balance indeed is the key.

One picture says what a million words cannot, but one wrong picture, can give a totally wrong impression. Congrats on this unique perspective
September 29th, 2010 at 8:11 am
For me personally…. pictures are the life of my articles
so I always give it so much importance
September 29th, 2010 at 9:01 am
you are right. I usually attach pictures to my post, limited to few only. For haiku poems, the picture is very important as the poem is too short, and the picture itself says it all.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:09 am
great post
September 30th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
I completely agree with you. I only add pics when they are necessary. Sometimes the pics make my articles longer than I want them to be.
October 2nd, 2010 at 11:35 am
Good article. I agree I am one who would rather picture in my
mind when I read. Although I tend to pictures in my animal articles.
You are further correct about the looking or visual factor.

You know, I often pose that very question to myself. And I think there are times when a B&W photo trumps color. But, that’s just me!
