I participated in the first contest the website had and the experience was a good one.
I was searching writing gigs on craigslist in early September when I stumbled upon an advertisement for a new website: Notes and Gracenotes. This is a new site for writers. It boasts a monthly competition in the areas of Fiction, Nonfiction, Screenplay and Poetry. The entrance fee is $8 and you could win $50 or more (prize goes up as more people join). This is a brand new site so, except for the contest, there’s not much else going on. The hope is to have a classified section for writers, writing tips, and an online community.
Intrigued, and looking for online opportunities, I went to the site and checked it out and it seemed pretty legit. There was a welcome message and one or two people had already registered. I’ve never been apart of the beginning of a website before so decided to risk it and submit a screenplay.
I decided to hastily copy and paste my latest short script, “Awkward Dinner” in as a submission. I grew to regret my decision because it wasn’t formatted correctly and read much more like a stage play than a screenplay. I wrote it like that on purpose to make it easier to film, I was also shooting the movie myself, but didn’t realize how bland it would come off as a script. In short, I did not win.
However, I did get some excellent feedback from the judges. After the contest was concluded, I was emailed a very nice but blunt critique of my submission. I knew I’d goofed by sending in the one I did but I appreciated the critique for the good and bad things it had to say about my screenplay. It was honest and helpful.
I know writers hate to pay money for contests. I look at it as an acceptable expense. Contests give you exposure and may help with your career, but the people running them need to eat too, so I don’t mind throw a couple of bucks their way. If money’s an issue right now, and it is for most of us I think, then you may want to visit the site and comment on other peoples work. There’s also a section where you can upload your work for free to get comments.
I would highly recommend Notes and Gracenotes to any anyone interested in making your work more visible. If nothing else, browse around the site. There are a few helpful links for writers and some links to other comeptitions. It’s a site in it’s newborn stages. I believe it will grow and give a new voice to writers.
