Improve your writing

My Triond Experience

I have heard a good experience on Triond, I have made a lot of friends and wish to make many more, but I feel, and this is personal, I feel its time we helped improving the site by being honest in the comments we make on each others posts.

I do not know
why you are on Triond, I do not know the sole purpose for your presence on this
great site in the making but then I feel free to air my views. I joined Triond
some time back in 2008 and posted a few articles. Top on my list of priorities
was to sharpen my writing, hone my skills and improve with time. I also found Triond
an excellent forum to share my views and express what I felt without
inhibition. Did Triond disappoint? Maybe.

I had great
expectations but didn’t know the way. I got to learn the hard way by making
fresh discoveries day in day out. My first friend came along, the experienced and
deeply religious Karen Gross and from her I had the first comments. How
grateful I was. I learned that adding fellow contributors as friends and
commenting on their entries would popularize my posts, and yes it did.

Weeks down the
line, I discovered that however free I was to share my views, not everyone
would agree with them. I personally didn’t care so much but then discovered too
that many of us are easily hurt and therefore learned to weigh my words in
whatever comments I made.

Later came the
realization that short stories never got any views. Could it have been for
their length or content, I never knew, but then, I stopped posting my short
stories, I stopped posting creative writing because like any other human being,
I feel good when people read and appreciate my work.

I have made
friends, some who have never let an article pass without a sweet comment,
without useful insight. I won’t name names, but for all those who have made me
improve as a writer, I remain eternally grateful.

I must point out
though that in the spirit of commenting on each other’s work, there are those
among us who have coded responses. They use the same words or phrases to post
comments on all articles be they Medical oriented or historical. I have been
nasty enough to tell them to stop commenting all the same for I found it
irritating. When they didn’t stop, I removed them from my list of friends, but
yet this wasn’t enough. My plea therefore is this; let us be honest in the
assessment of each post.

Do not post a
comment just for the sake of it. Do not seek to make me feel good at the
expense of posterity. I need you to read, I need you to help me improve, I need
you to learn something from my post, I also need to learn something from your
posts. Is that too much to ask?

For the young
members of Triond who would want to know how I make it to the list of hot
content once in a while, I would say I don’t know! Just read your friends and
comment on their work. They will read you and comment on your work, and
hopefully with time, you will improve.

For those who
ask me how much I earn on Triond, sorry to disappoint you buddies. Triond does
not pay anything worth the sweat shed in writing great articles. Do not write
for money alone, if you do, it won’t be for long. I earn nothing on Triond,
nothing compared to the time and money that I spend on this site, nothing
compared to the time I put into refining my articles, but again nothing compared
to the joy I feel for being part of a great community.

I do not plan to
quit Triond like some of my best friends have done already, but I wish I could
help improve it in one way or another. It offers everything in terms of
content, it offers everything in terms of friendly readers who are there to
encourage each other, it offers everything in terms of opportunity but for
those who wish to earn from it, I guess it will be a long…long wait.

Sometimes the
number of posts in my news feed is overwhelming, but I try to read each and
every article posted by my friends. If I have forgotten any of your posts, I would
like a kind reminder and I will attend to it.

If I have rubbed
you the wrong way by offering some criticism, its time to say am sorry, but
would like to see more criticism on my articles, I would appreciate it if you
told me plainly that an article sucks, for writers are born critics, rather
than keep lying to me with…good post, good post…good post.

Life has taught me that honesty is not always the best policy.

You already are an excellent writer, I think that it’s a wonderful thing when anyone views our work you shouldn’t be irritated but very thankful. I have supported some people on this site for a very long time and then one day they turn their back on me which leads me to believe that they don’t care for my work, but that’s okay I will just move on for they don’t hurt me they really hurt themselves especially if their work is good. I don’t possess that turn my nose up in the air attitude. Remember my friend God said we should be greatful for everything because if we are not we might just wind up with nothing. It ture some people only view the work so you can view theirs and as far as being a better writer I read article and take my directions from the best writers on this site because there are many. Much love my friend.

Well there you go ruffling feathers again ha ha. good for you I to have loads of folk who ask to be friends, then bombard you with stuff that is obviously cut, and paste mostly nothing of an original
note or line, as for money like you it eludes me to, but then again I write for fun and relaxation mostly. your short stories where the thing that I noticed first and hope you do not stop writing them my friend because you are a good writer so keep it up…. at the top of every hill there is a easy roll down. keep your pencil sharp mind too all the best my friend.

I have found Triond to be an excellent training ground. I often joke that my earnings here would maybe buy one hamburger per month. However, if I had not started writing here, and if I had not read articles other writers have written about good places to sell their work, if I had not gotten the many wonderful responses from other writers (as well as tips, gentle critiques, and a a growing awareness of when I had received a “polite” response, I would not be in the position I currently enjoy today: of being able to actually receive enough money from writing to make a real difference in my budget. While I may not always agree with what you write, I appreciate the thorough and meaningful comments you always make.

You have very valid points in your fantastic article.Today I checked comments and found the same comment on two different pieces of work. The worst part that got me is that the comment didn’t really make sense telling me that my work wasn’t read. And I dont write for money or I would be a starving writer.I write for fun and whatever I can learn from it.I dont get to read all I want to of my friends work due to something called life and its responsibilities. But the am hours let me read what I can and write for me as well. But I do appreciate being read even if they did scribble some silly comment they dont mean or “good post”.Enough honest ones come my way to let me know I’m getting read. And yes….I do get told at times my work didn’t measure up in my early days on Triond. But what bothers me was they were from writers that was newbies and couldn’t write themselves very well rather then the ones that could actually help me learn from it.I just laugh, shake it off and know that youth cannot begin to run the same race as the experienced writers/people before them. You live and learn or is it learn as you live?Doesn’t matter..we all end up eventually at the same finish line.Older, wiser and able to write like we have done it for many years.Anyway, great article, well written with very valid point…was well liked.

Was about to quit writing due to time constraint and commitment to my blog. However if I think it wisely, I guess Triond has improved my writing skills and I should not quit writing.

Excellent article and I agree with you. Triond is a good platform and it offers a good opportunity in fine tuning one’s skill of writing. Besides this, support from one another is also very important.

Ya, what you said I agree. I notice there are some who always give the same comments to everyone on any article. There are also some who added us as friends but have never comment on any of our work, have you come across?
    :)

You are right Star. Some people will never comment on anybody else’ work no matter how good or bad. They write for themselves.

You make a good point – don’t just make a comment for the sake of making a comment, but read, be encouraged by a post and don’t comment just to have your avatar up there. Great post.

I can’t read beyond two lines
    As my eyes swell
But this I wish to tell
    You write very well
    And
So I make an exception for you,
    I read you
    And
    In my comments
    I’m sincerely true,
    You know it too.

    I also tell those guys
    Don’t simply cyclostyle
    It gives me a pain
    Of how so much
    They are naive.
    Yet they don’t restraint
    And
    Continue to write good…
    Liked it
    And what not
    I forgive them
    For they know not.

I give credit where credit is due .. and if I don’t like something, rather than degrade someone or their work .. I try to give constructive criticism, an opinion, or knowledge based on what I know is true. Writing for the money is OK if you need an income .. but you won’t make money if you don’t have a marketing clue/plan in place first .. in addition, writing for money is OK, if you believe in your heart, that your work has real value attached to it. Writing because you love it is a good thing .. if you’re willing to take the good with the bad of course .. nobody likes to be patronised or criticised harshly .. having experienced writers give sincere and helpful comments, makes it all worthwhile for me Shilaho :-)

I agree, while it is ok to bounce back ideas, but unfortunately we don’t like to undermind, or critize too harshly, and because of that I feel that sometimes we are not get a true picture of what we are writing about. It is a great site, and I love it, personally I believe practice makes perfect and here on this site is the place to be.

You write well. But you need to know that we can write for the money and this was my policy all along. If I didn’t write in the past, it was because I was making better money elsewhere. Now I came for the sole purpose of making money by writing. And I am not stopping at it. The solution is just around the corner when you are about change your thoughts.

I too have noticed lots of copy and paste comments even on my posts. Your experience here echoes my own. As for your writing skills, they are already very well in place. Just keep sharing your nicely presented views.

Wow this was right from the heart! I have learn’t not to take it seriously on here, people are here for many different reasons and I think the copy and paste people are here to make money only. You are a very good writer and I always learn something from you ! Perhaps I just done feel you can learn much from me!

Oh by the way thanks for the comment on my kick ass review. I too love Nicholas Cage but his role in that film was not one of his best, It just can’t compeer with the likes of face off! x

I have also felt many of the same things that you have expressed. For many people it is all about views. I have learned to accept people for who they are. If they wish to leave hackneyed comments, I just ignore them and concentrate on my craft of writing. There are always some people who actually do read my stuff and I am grateful for their comments..:)

I am new to Triond and I don’t know much about others. I didn’t read your other articles but after reading this one I would like to read more by you and my true feelings are that “I loved your passion for writing”.

Chill, man. No point of getting damn sore because everyone won’t tell you “you suck.” maybe you dont. I don’t think you do. I think your works were actually great. As for the earning part, well, people speak for themselves, and I’ve yet to find out. Look, these people who spam on your comments? Just ignore them. They’re practically harmless. Speaking of honesty, I do prefer being honest, too, but sometimes you got to balance it with lies. ;)
