Movie Review

A New Zealand Scientist wakes up to find he’s the last man on Earth in the Sci-Fi thriller, The Quiet Earth.

Scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) wakes up one morning and drives off to work only to discover that he somehow slept through the apocalypse. As he drives past mysteriously deserted cars, homes, and businesses it slowly dawns on him that everyone else has vanished and he is the last man on Earth. Or is he? And what happened to cause everyone else on Earth to disappear? He begins to search for answers and other survivors, but what will he find?

The pacing is very slow throughout the first third of the movie as Zac and the audience both discover how empty an existence being the last person alive would be. However the movie picks up after that and tells a character driven story.

Directed by Geoff Murphy and filmed in New Zealand. Based on Craig Harrison’s post-apocalyptic science fiction novel of the same name.
