Making Comments on Articles

It really irritates me when some silly idiot writes “good info….thanks for sharing” on each and every article I write! I really look forward to an intelligent comment that supports or refutes my material and that I might feel urged to reply to. This nonsense of commenting on an article simply for the sake of it is complete madness.

I submitted a picture the other day – a pic of an original painting that had been converted to a vector diagram. I am proud of it – it is a great pic and I have it listed at Cafepress and people actually buy cards made with this pic on them – have a look! Somebody wrote a comment that says “good article” ! Clearly it is not an article it is a picture and that person is just commenting for the sake of writing a comment! This is useless isn’t it? Why would someone do that?

And then it struck me – now I get it! If everyone comments on everyone else’s work – even if it is an inane and stupid comment, it feeds the popularity of the article. I am supposed to be thrilled that I receive unintelligible drivel or patronising thanks as comments on my article because it will rank me higher in the search engines. What is more I believe there is an expectation that I will then spend hours of my time tracking down articles written by the drivel writers and leave some equally inane drivel in their comments so that they now figure higher in the search engines! And then we can all be friends and have virtual parties in chat rooms filled with more drivel and lots of inanity!

I am just learning how all this works. I now know that those meaningless comments posted are in fact what may end up putting cash in the bank for me. And if I go to someone else’s articles and write meaningless drivel they will thank me for it and respond with more meaningless drivel commented on my articles and my friendship circle will increase! Soon enough I will have an empire of friends I have never met making meaningless comments on my articles so that I will return the favour and build their income for them.

My real friends just buy a bottle of wine to share with me or ask me to enjoy some time together. What’s more they know how to speak and write English at a level that is both coherent and meaningful and our conversations have often been focussed on solving the issues of the Universe. I never have to ask them to comment on my comments and not one of them would have the gall to say “hey nice comment, thanks for sharing”.

Well it looks like I will be poor forever! I am sick of the meaningless drivel and would rather be poor than tolerate it! Please only comment on my articles if you have something meaningful to say. And NO I will not be your friend just so I can waste hours of my day contributing yet further meaningless drivel to your nonsense! I’d rather have coffee with a real friend in the real world – thanks for that! Nice sharing with you! Great article! Have a good afternoon!

Some people would just to leave some sort of comment just to let you know that they have view your work. I appreciate any sort of comment that I get. I don’t always feel long-winded. You have to understand something there are alot of writer on this site who try to support allot of other writers, (SO MANY) can’t simply leave extensive comments on everyone work, then there wouldn’t be enough time to support other, and that would be pretty selfish. Comments should be appreciated not critized. Your insulting people and maybe some people may not be prompted to continue reading your work.

You\’ve got a point there. But I think some people are like appreciating your article in few words rather than writing another article as a comment. Thanks

My question to you would be then, “WHY ARE YOU HERE?”. As diamondpoet metioned above, some people just leave a short note so that you know they have read your article. You can choose to return the favor or not. Personally, I don’t have time to leave a commentary on every article I read, but this one merits something. (That’s not necessarily a good thing.) You need to understand also, that Triond writers are from around the globe, so to insult someone with that “know how to speak and write English at a level that is both coherent and meaningful” comment is just mean and totally uncalled for.

My advice to you would be to spend your time talking to your “real friends” and “solving the problems of the universe” (now THAT’S funny!). Let them read your articles and give you the meaningful, insightful comments you’re so desperately looking for. The whole purpose of Triond is to exhibit your work for anyone and everyone to see, and to comment on if they wish to.

Okey, I\’ll take the bait and respond, even though it might cost me a few of my relatively few readers. I post in Triond for four reasons. First, it is a convenient place for both my Triond friends and my personal friends and relatives to follow my work, to see how and what I\’m doing. From them I expect no more than a simple \’hello\’ or \’I enjoyed that\’ because I already know they\’re sincere. Second is because Triond provides for me an incentive to be productive and to produce works which I am not embarrassed to have read in public. This is a personal thing and needs no feedback. Third, one eventually is able to identify a small group of like minded writers with comparable ability. Non-professional, non-published amateurs like myself. It is from these that I learn the most, but most of our conversations go on privately, not in the comment box. The comment box is needed only to establish the initial contact and mutual interest. Finally, there are a few published, professional writers and critics who are willing to read and comment on selected works. These are a real find.

So, back to the original question. If you like my work, please push the I LIKE button. If you have read the work and have something to say, please do. I then will probably visit your site and, if I find five works to my liking, I will push my Friends to follow up. But you won\’t even know that unless you watch for new Fans. And please don\’t be upset if I disappear even from that. I will have tried but it just didn\’t work out. The serious friends and professionals I will recognize soon enough from their initial comments.

I admit that the English language issue is a bit touchy. However, this is, after all, an English language site for creative writing in English. I read work by authors from several different cultures. The difference shows up in the imagery that is used, not in the grammar and punctuation.

Sometimes it helpful to know that people read your articles once in a while. Also, nobody is forcing you to read their articles in return.

Hiho Cheryl Malloy :-) I like to give a fully-fledged, honest comment to my friends’ articles/poems/audio/pics/photos..I don’t always have a lot of time on my hands..but when I do get a few hours up my sleeve..I make the effort. For you..I will make an extra special effort in the near future. Don’t be discouraged or disheartened..there is much worse goings-on here @Triond Cheryl. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do and if certain people annoy you with their half-arsed comments..delete ‘em from your friends’ list..they will soon go away. Chin up and keep-up the good writing :-)

Dear Cheryl! The comments over your comments by “ashan1614, are right on the dot. You don’t have to be upset with “short comments’” Your article is a clear pointer to being arrogant and insulting those who do read your articles but avoid commenting in details . My suggestion to you is to be patient and polite for getting a greater acceptance from majority of readers and not one and all be sort of expectations. Take all comments into your stride and as some other readers have pointed out the undesirables can be ignored if you choose to?

When words are not better than silence, it is better not to pronounce them, or in this case – to write them!

I totally get you . I’ve had my share of “good post”
“well written” , “interesting piece” “yadi ya ya” irritates the hell out of me. In fact this really put me off in reading and commenting to these people cuz they are here to play games and I rather live with my USD0.19 then USD5 with stream of non sense comments

… ok i agree if they make me 25$ daily i am all game for these comments … but its just me talking :P

ok i am ending this with ‘nicely written’ but i’ve read it and feel that way …

p.s your paintings awesome too… will take a deeper dive in them soon … oh and i mean this too !
