There are many ways of promoting articles, websites and blogs, but correct use of search engines can give you continuous traffic. Do the job once and do it correctly and you will reap the benefits for years.
There are many ways to promote your articles and blogs but adding them to search engines is the simplest method of all. Furthermore, doing this once will guarantee you a steady stream of traffic for years to come, if your article is worth reading.
By worth reading I really mean worth reading and remembering. Some articles are transient. They amuse for a few minutes and are then forgotten, or they are very topical and no longer of interest to most people after a few days. These articles may get many thousands of reads today and tomorrow, but by the end of the week they will be passé and no longer worth looking at for most people. I am not referring to the ‘worth’ of an article in terms of how well it is written but with regard to topicality. Some articles date very quickly.
For example, if I write an article about a particular movie star who is having a love affair with another movie star, the article may be popular. However, it will date very quickly. Within a week it will be old news and not interesting anymore.
To make an article worth reading in a months time, or a years time, it needs to be informative. An evergreen article is one that is always up to date. Evergreen articles do not date and should inform, entertain, or provide solutions to problems.
For instance, 10 Surprising Uses For Aspirin is an evergreen title for an article.
But ‘Should Madonna Wear Those Outfits At Her Age?’ is a dated articled. It will go out of vogue very rapidly.
To get internet traffic on a long term basis, an article needs to be written in good English. It should be correctly punctuated and the spelling should be accurate whether the writer uses British, or American English. Badly crafted articles will not attract long term readers. If a writer gets a reputation for poorly written articles, he or she may as well give up.
This sounds harsh but the the bottom line is that if you want to succeed long term you need to learn the tools of your craft: grammar, spelling and style. After all, you would never trust a plumber to repair a leaky tap if he didn’t have the tools, or didn’t know how to use them. If he didn’t appear to know what he was doing, you would never trust his work. It works the same way with writing. It’s a craft and you need to learn to use all the tools.
Keywords are basically the words that people who use search engines use to search for particular topics. For example, if I was interested in finding out about hotels in England, I might search using the terms : English hotels, England, hotels, UK, holiday, accommodation.
If your article contains the keywords required, it will show up near the top of the results list in Google, Yahoo, or whichever search engine is being used.
This is a very basic example of how keywords can be used.
Keywords can also be phrases (long tailed keywords) and you should use these in your article. Google Adsense keywords will give you an excellent guide to the keywords and phrases you should use. Take a look at the most popular ones and try to incorporate them into your article. Don’t cram your article with them though (keyword stuffing), or it will be obvious that you have done this.
A 400 word article should include keywords every 40 words. This isn’t a rigid formula but it is a good guideline. Experiment with keywords and discover what works best for you.
So, let’s assume that you have a very well crafted article on an evergreen subject, with appropriate keywords and you now want to add it to internet search engines and directories in order to get long term traffic.
There are many services on the internet that will add your articles and websites/blogs to search engines for you, for a fee. They may even promise you top ten ranking. Think carefully before you part with your money. How can they guarantee you top ten placement? What happens if they get eleven customers? Get the idea?
Then there are various online sites that will add your url to search engines for you. Take care here because some search engines don’t allow automated submissions. I use a website called Submit Express. This is free of charge in exchange for your email address and a mention on your website, or blog, if you have one. There are some additional paid listings offered by the website but there is no obligation to buy them.
Then there is the safest and most thorough way of all. Add your article urls to search engines yourself. Do each one carefully and make sure it is accurate and complete. This is the best option if you have the time.
Ideally, each and every article should be added to search engines manually to get the very best results.
If time is short use an online submission site like Submit Express as mentioned above and supplement the list of sites you will see after your submission runs, with manual entries to other search engines.
There are many other ways to get traffic to your articles and websites. Here are a few links to tried and tested methods. If you want to check out how much traffic these bring in daily, or weekly, take a look at the visitor counter at Words To The Wise.
How To Make Money And Build Your Career As A Writer

An excellent write up which clarifies a lot of detail, especially for those starting out on the online writing or blogging pathway. It is easy to sit back and wait for the hits to come in – and as Louie points out that will never happen unless you are proactive in attracting them!

Not an expert, Maria. I just read, remember and study things a lot. I figured that it can’t be that difficult to drive traffic to a website, or article. It is just a case of learning how.

I have been learning about SEO and using keywords for two years. You have pointed out a few things I had not yet considered. As I write, I can see that different articles have different types of interest, as you say, either they are a flash in the pan or they are evergreen. I try to have a bit of both.
January 28th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
This is a very informative article. I always enjoy reading about ways to get more traffic.
