Increase The Visual Appeal, Increase Readership

If your article doesn’t load quickly or the layout is not appealing to the reader’s eye they may not read it. And if they don’t read that one, they won’t click on your other work. Here are some ideas to make your articles more pleasing to the eye.

The layout of your work can determine if the reader continues on reading your work or abandons it.  This is especially true if the page is loading very slowly.  The number one reason for slow page loads, other than slow or poor Internet connections, is large image files.  Having photos, drawings and charts can greatly add to your work.  However, they can also be a large detriment as well.  Very often I see work here on Triond with huge images in the body of the work.  This can be distracting to the eye, annoyingly slow to load, and an irritation to have to scroll through.

For the best results with images, I recommend linking from an image already on the web instead of using Triond’s “Get Image Suggestions” button.  These images are used over and over in countless articles, stories and poems.  Find something different; an image search takes only a few extra seconds but is well worth the time.  And make sure to resize it to a better proportion if it is too large.  After all, the image should not be larger than the article itself; readers are here to read, not scroll down past huge pictures.  Be sure to watch for copyright infringements when doing this though.  Generally the image search will warn you of potential problems here.  And if there is a question, go onto another image.  You may consider linking to the image, too, as a courtesy to the artist/photographer that produced the work.

Although Triond offers alignment of left, center or right with text and images the option rarely, in my experiments, work.  Due to the advertisements that are placed on the web page with your work the images you use are often in conflict with another banner, ad or video.  The great looking option of text wrapping around an image is generally useless, too.  I wish that those problems would be corrected by Triond to make our layout stay the way we set them.  Perhaps they, Triond, will address this issue in the future.  For the time being, you are best off to place your image in a new, separate paragraph and either right or center align it, as these are more often unchanged than any of the other options you might try.

Now for Text

The body of the article can be enhanced by using the “Headings” option, as I have done above.  You will probably notice that the above referenced line is right-aligned.  I set it for center-alignment so you can see how Triond makes these changes no matter your preference.  This bold, larger type is a great way to separate and distinguish different sections of an article.  You can see a good example of this in this article.

A Little More On Images

Notice the nicely proportioned size of the image?  Now look at it in the original size

See what I mean about properly sizing the images?  The images are set for text wrapping, too.  When you read this it may or may not  be.  It will depend on how Triond puts the ads and such into the article body.

Lastly, think of your potential readers when you are laying out your work.  We want the reader to find interest on some level in our work.  If they like the writing they might click on more of our work by clicking on our pen name and seeing our profile/portfolio.  However, if the page loads terribly slowly, the images are way out of proportion or jumbled up they might not even take the time to read the first piece, let alone go onto another on.

I hope that these tips give you some thoughts on how to better display, and thus market, your work on Triond and other sites.  A well written piece with visual appeal has a greater chance of making a would-be one-time reader into a regular subscriber of your work, giving you greater regular exposure, recognition and revenue.
