The Draw

You have just learned lesson number one and you didn’t even know it (or maybe you did). Here’s a clue: why are you here reading this right now?

Did you catch it? Okay,  I’ll stop messing with your head. The headline got you. You saw the words “increase blog and website traffic ” and you were all over it. And that’s exactly what you want to happen. You’ve got to grab the reader’s attention with something they’re interested in and you ‘ve got to do it early.

Let me explain further.

If you’re interested in making money online you’re looking for an article or site that’s going to tell you how to do that. As you scan the “headers” on the different websites and articles, you’re looking for something that relates to what you are interested in doing. If you don’t see it in the headline of a particular site, you probably won’t click on it because you don’t see what you are looking for and you don’t have time to waste reading through a a lot of copy trying to find what you want.

It’s the same principle that you already use but probably didn’t even think about it.

When you go to the grocery store, you usually go in looking for specific items just like people on the Internet are doing. You go to the section that is supposed to have what you want and look on the appropriate shelf. If you don’t see it out front you usually assume the store doesn’t have any and you start to walk away (then you see it on the wrong shelf where someone put it, don’t you hate that?)

The point is, when you didn’t see what you wanted right away you were going to look somewhere else. Another store perhaps.

The same thing happens on the Internet, people are looking for certain things. It’s not always about money either. People on the Internet are looking for all kinds of things.

There are people looking for rare collectibles. There are people looking information on how to install something. Right now there are people looking for Michael Jackson memorabilia. There are people looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right. Are you available? If you have what they are looking for or know where they can find it, tell them in your headline.

As my old journalism profesor used to say “headlines sell papers.” And he was right.

I wrote an article on Michael Jackson’s child molestation accusations about a week ago ( a shameless plug, I know, the link’s below). The last time I checked it was in the fourth position on the Google search ranking for that topic out of 404,00 entries.

Pretty impressive for a rookie ( I’ve only been at this for about a month).

Getting traffic to your site is key to your success as a writer, business person or whatever you are. Put what you have out front on the shelf where people who are looking for it will be able to easily find it.

This is the first in a series of articles on the subject of drawing traffic to your site. be on the look out for Part 2.

here is the link for the Michael Jackson article I mentioned: http://musicouch.com/genres/pop/did-michael-jackson-really-molest-children/

Do a Google search for “Michael Jackson molest children” for kicks and see where you find it. Have a good one.
