How to Cope with Loneliness

Everyone has to deal with the sadness of being alone at least once in their life, and sometimes the feeling of loneliness and abandonment can lead to very serious consequences if one does not know of healthy ways to cope. What are some good ways to deal with loneliness?

Some people can’t stand being alone, while others prefer staying in a corner rather than mingling with friends. However, even the most social person can experience a feeling of abandonment.  Loneliness is relative, and it depends on the way people experience it.  Someone who is used to being alone might not feel lonely, but he may have episodes of lonesomeness some hours in the day.  Similarly, someone who parties all day and goes home to an empty house could feel the exact same emotion.  Still, even someone who lives in a home packed with people yet cannot connect with them in a deeper level, can feel alone and miserable.

Here are some effective ways to deal with loneliness of all kinds:

·         Listen to music – songs often have the power of releasing all that negative emotional and mental energy.  Channeling your troubles through music, whether you are plainly listening or actually playing an instrument or singing, can lighten the load.  If you’re looking for some good songs to listen to when you’re lonely, check out these 10 Perfect Songs to Listen to When You’re Lonely and Alone.

·         Write – a famous line by Dawson Trotman goes, “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through your fingertips.”  Write anything that comes to mind.  Begin a journal or a diary in which to express your deepest thoughts and feelings.  Conjure up some poems or stories, or short essays.  Writing is a very good therapeutic technique for troubled thoughts.

·         Talk to yourself – talking out loud to yourself doesn’t mean you’re crazy.  In fact, it is one of the recommended activities to reduce stress.  Self-talk can be a very healthy exercise, and it can clear the mind equally as well as writing does.

·         Watch a movie – take some of your old discs and load them in the player.  Escape the world for an hour or two, and try to forget your circumstance.  This is a good technique for when you want to deal with loneliness momentarily and for a short while.

·         Spirituality – this is probably the best, most effective way to deal with loneliness.   Always remember, wherever you are, the Almighty loves you and watches over you even when the times get rough.  Get in touch with your spiritual side and commune with God.  He has all the answers.
