Would you like to have 120,000 monthly visits (or more) in your articles? Maybe you should write about the new First Lady.

120,000 readers. That’s the amount of traffic that the blog Mrs. O got last November, according to The New York Times. Mrs. O is not an official blog and it’s focused only in one aspect of the future First Lady’s life: her look. Clothes, shoes and jewelry are some of the categories in which the articles are divided.
Here the columnists and readers discuss what color she should wear or how her fashion style can be compared with others ex presidents’ wives.
Of course, I’m not saying that everyone who writes about Mrs. Obama is going to have the same success, but certainly she’s on the way to become one of the most popular public figures around the world and she attracts the interest of lots of people.
But what is more interesting to me is something that I’ve been reading lately. Many experienced web writers recommend to pick the appropriate niche or specific subject to write about if you want to get a good level of traffic. And the popularity of Mrs. O blog seems to be a good example of this. It’s not just about only one person, it’s about only one characteristic of this person. Personally, I would have believed that only one topic would limit your range of readers. But maybe it’s just a question of choosing the right subject.

That’s crazy and interesting at the same time. It’s amazing to me that people tend to focus on women’s clothes (Sarah Palin, Cindy McCain, etc.) when the political figure is a woman and politics when the political figure is a man. I don’t know whether it’s more about sexism or just the fact that women’s clothes are more interesting than men’s. Probably both I guess!
