Flash Fiction: Happy Anniversary to Me

Some relationships are just not what we would like them to be.

Tiffany was so excited. She was planning her anniversary party for weeks. It was only natural. After all those years that she invested in her relationship with David, all the heartache she had to endure and all the problems she managed to solve, she deserved to celebrate. It was her night. David knew and had no problem with it. He didn’t like anniversaries anyway.

Lavender candles, vanilla candles and cinnamon candles were all over the living room. David would have a melt down once he saw them. He was afraid that one day both he and Tiffany would get burnt alive. Tiffany never worried about that. She knew David was watching too many horror movies. After all, who cared what David thought? This was her anniversary. David would have to let her enjoy it and keep his stupid fears to himself.

Tiffany had ordered her favorite pasta with salmon, cheesecake and of course champagne. Actually, it was David who was supposed to make the delivery. He had some errands to run anyway, so Tiffany asked him to take care of that as well. No big deal. Tiffany told David to take his time. She wanted him to pick a special gift for her and that was one of those things that take time. She was secretly hoping he would remember that diamond ring they had seen in that  jewelery store together. She didn’t want to spell it out for him, but she wanted to make sure he remembered. That is why she spent all afternoon yesterday singing ”Diamonds are forever” while she was enjoying a bubble bath.

Finally, David found the way back home. It was past 9, and Tiffany was hungry as hell. Her eyes full of hope and anticipation,  quickly scanned the packages David was carrying. Then she looked at David, who was surprisingly calm and not tired at all. Something weird was happening, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. David waved at her to come and sit to the table. Then he told Tiffany to open the packages. Like  a small child getting presents from Santa, Tiffany started anxiously unwrapping the first package. From the corner of her eye, she noticed David  half-smiling, but she did not paid attention.  Once she finished, with her eyes and mouth wide open, she looked at David who hadn’t stopped smiling.

” David, what the hell is that?

” House brochures. I got plenty so that you can make an informed decision”.

” We are…we are moving?” Tiffany mumbled. She couldn’t believe that David made such a decision without at least asking  her first.

David looked at her straight in the eye.” Actually Tiffany, you are moving”.

Wow! That was quite an anniversary present. Perhaps Tyffany should have thought about David a bit more. A very good story.
