It certainly tells me one thing about my headlines.
The Emotional Marketing Value Headline Analyzer is a free tool that rates your article headlines to try and determine how effectively your headlines connect with people. The better your headlines connect with and bring out emotions in people the more likely they are to click on your articles and read them. In theory anyway. The Analyzer rates headlines on a scale form 0% to 75%. 30%-40% is considered acceptable while the best writers headlines will rate 50%-75%. I’ve just started using this free tool and decided to to see how my already published articles rate on the EMV (Emotional Marketing Value).
After taking off for over a year I decided to start writing again at Triond in January of 2009. So far this month I’ve published 25 new articles but have only used the EMV Analyzer on my last two articles but one of the articles, How You Can Actually Make Money Online Today, already has 10 views in less then 24 hours without me promoting it in any way.
For articles I published the 1st week of January without using the analyzer, Evaluating the Mark Derosa Trade has done the best with 49 views and it also rates the best on the EMV at 60%. My worst article, Do Keyword Based Computer Formulas Work? has only done 14 views but still rates at 50% on the EMV. Not too much to learn from that but the data is only 3 weeks old.
For all of my articles published for well over 1 year the numbers are interesting.
Baseball’s All-Time Greatest Teams has done 187 views in January and is my best viewed article to date with 24,252 total views. This article did 20,000 views the first week it was published and it continues to do 200 plus views almost every month since. It rates at 25% on the EMV.
My worst performing article of all time, Will Cole Hamels Win the Cy Young Award in 2007? is ironically the first article I ever published through Triond. It has done just 56 total views in just under 2 years. It rates a 0% on the EMV. So the EMV certainly works for that headline.
My next best performing article in January is Edgar Martinez’s Hall of Fame Chances with 122 views and a EMV rating of 33.33%.
How to Draft the Next Great WR in Your Fantasy Football League does a 25% on the EMV but has not done well for me and has less than 100 views in a year and half.
What I have noticed the most is that almost all of my articles headlines score 40% or less. Since the best writers headlines will score 50%-75% I can clearly see that I need to concentrate more on my headlines. Over time it’s going to be very interesting to see how my articles do now that I will make sure they all have at least a 50% score on the EMV.
If you would like to see how your articles headlines rate you can use the EMV tool for free at the Advanced Marketing Institute.

I have used the tool in the past, but I tend to use it for email subject lines. I tend to write high EMV titles, but they tend t still need tweaking and testing. Overall, though, not bad for a free tool to help you do that tweaking…

Tried it yesterday.
Got eye-opening score of 112.5% – for headline.
