Do Triond Writers Need Personal Blogs?

The answer is definitely no. Do you want to know the reason why?

I’ve been the Editor/Publisher of the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette for a year now.  The publication will surpass 19,000 hits in a few days.  The Gazette on average sends my Triond Account several hits every day whether I post something or not.  I now average three to four postings on the blog per week.

For a long time I used my Gazette blog as a marketing tool for my articles and flash fiction stories on my Triond Account.  In those days I would put up 10 to 14 posts every day.  And it paid off.  In one month my blog sent 224 hits to my Triond content.  I thought I had found the answer to my desire for lots of Triond page views.  Of course, at the same time I was struggling to publish content on Triond.  I was busy busy busy.  Then I got smart.

Writing is not only my passion it’s also my business.  And we all know that in business time is money.

I was spending a lot of time on my blog trying to drive traffic to my Triond content.  As I became more involved in the Triond Community by adding friends and reading and commenting on their content, I noticed that I was getting more traffic from the Triond Community than I was getting from my blog and I was putting in less time in the community than what I was putting into blogging.

So, I started focusing on active involvement in the community and started blogging whenever I felt like it.  Now I’m getting more hits on my Triond Account than ever.

So, I don’t blog that much and it’s still very nice to get two, three and four hits on my Triond Account every day from my blog; but I’m getting far more traffic by just being an active participant in the Triond Community.

I seem to be getting equal numbers of views from here and Stumbleupon, but I always appreciate the comments from friends here.

It’s hard to get traffic in triond.

ken, I truly appreciate your confidence in me. Howeve, my income goals are very, very modest. And I’ll need a lot of things to go my way to achieve these modest goals. I’m workin’ at it.

Katien, right now my top three traffic sources are Triond, Outbrian and The Gazette. My top source use to be The Gazette but putting all that work into The Gazette was simply not efficient.

Hi, Papa: Writing actually helps me to step back and think about what I’m doing. The more clearly I can explain to someone else what I’m doing the more clearly I can judge my own situation.

hannemarie, much of what I know about generating traffic for my Triond Account I figured out by reading articles in the Triond Community. It pays in lots of ways to read and to leave comments.

giftarist, I don’t know about being a millonaire but I do know something about getting a lot more traffic for your Triond Account and that’s a good thing, too.

Jane, it’s not difficult if a writer writes content people would be interested in reading, writes often and reads and comments on other writers’ work.

The more a writer does this the more traffic a writer will probably get.

Of course the quality of a writer’s work also impacts the amount of traffic a writer can generate.

I find that my blog is better used for series on a subject, at the same time it drives traffic to my triond and ac articles. I keep the blog entries short.

  • Guy Hogan
    September 18th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Marie, my blog entries are pretty short, too. One category that’s been successful for me is the Guest Writers category. It provides The Gazette with content and of course hits because the writers whose flash fiction stories are accepted for publication want all their family and friends to read their stories.

I find I do better by reading and commenting on Triond. That’s where most of my hits come from. People here usually return your comments and that adds up if you comment a lot.

Interesting . . . thanks for sharing your perspective. I’ve been flirting with the idea of starting a blog. But as you touched on in your article, time is money and you need to spend time doing marketing that is most productive. It seems that in order to turn Triond into a lucrative endeavor, you must drive traffic to your articles from outside Triond. I’m still working out the best way to do this.

Ruby, as you say if a writer comments a lot on other peoples’ content the other people will usually return the favor. This is the most efficient way to drive traffic to your content.

WriteEditSeek, I was trying to point out that the most effective way to drive traffic to your contet is “from within” the Triond Community.

  • Guy Hogan
    September 19th, 2009 at 8:19 am

thestickman, from my experience this is what I’ve found to be true. Although I plan to start using my blog more effectively I’m sure most of my traffic will still come from within the community.

Hi, Melody: Even though I won’t be putting up 10 post a day on The Gazette anymore it still brings me a nice number of hits every month but there’s no doubt that Triond is where the real action is as far as generating traffic.

  • Guy Hogan
    September 19th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

lillyrose, The Gazette is my Facebook. It takes time to get to be well know on a social network. So, for me Triond and The Gazette are my social networks.

I suppose it depends. I have been blogging anonymously for 5.5 years. I average about 600 unique users a day. If I gave up my anonymity I could send a lot of traffic my way. It would add up over time.

  • Guy Hogan
    September 23rd, 2009 at 8:33 am

Josh, I can only dream about The Gazette getting 600 hits a day. There are no ads on The Gazette so I try to direct traffic here. But it’s more time efficient to just concentrate on Triond. So, I do.

Very interesting. I actually started blogging 3 years ago on Myspace. That got to be a pain. Life and circumstance took away my time for doing it.

I recently started a blog at Blogger. I’ve transferred many of my Myspace posts there.

I mostly use my blog to hold work I can’t publish on Triond because of the TOS. I also use it as an online journal and for sharing things that I don’t feel would be up to par.

My blog gives me the freedom to be a little sloppy or to just goof off and get stuff off my mind that isn’t necessarily worthy of publication. However, it is also a good practice space for me to hone my writing. I don’t have the benefit of formal writing education.

I do envy that you can devote all your time and passion to writing. Having four children, that is not an option for me right now.

  • Guy Hogan
    September 26th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Lloyd, I’m trying to keep my personal blog active because the two or three hits it sends every day to my Triond account do add up; but my blog has become a very minor part of my business plan.

  • Judy Sheldon
    September 26th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Initially I opened my blogs primarily to increase traffic flow to my articles at Triond, but the more I blog the more I enjoy it. There are also ways to bring in revenue from blogging, which I have been exploring. I’ll pretty much write wherever there is a friendly atmosphere, and Triond has that. It has become a balancing act.
I hate the marketing aspect of writing. I do not want to run around joining a zillion bookmarking sites and trying to make a zillion times zillion friends to get ten reads. (exaggerated slightly) By the time I have read and commented on the zillion articles and waited 5 minutes for each comment to post after typing in my security string, I could have been half way through finishing my next article.

I have got most of my traffic from outside triond, facebook does not work for me neither does twitter. I have written a couple of pregnancy articles over the past couple of weeks and have found that when i placed my links on specialised . pregnancy sites i got a lot of traffic i am still figuring out a way to drive more traffic without putting in so much time thougt. keep up the good work though and good content.

I’m still working on figuring out how this all works! Neither Facebook nor my Hub articles get traffic here, to Triond.

All info is appreciated! Good article
