Death and Mourning for a Character

Yes, I presume the end of a horror novel is harsh, since you do have to kill some of your main characters, even if you are a little attached to them.

As stated before, I am a horror writer and I have to admit most of my work is cruel and grim.

Still I feel that it are stories that have to be told. Many of my characters are based on real stories of ghosts I channeled.

Triond is kind of my journal on writing the novel.

One of my reasons why I am not so active at it for a couple of weeks, is that the end is reaching and I know I have to kill characters that I got attached too. Still I do respect the story has to be told.

The ghost, old scriptures and real life experiences form the the frame. Music is mainly another inspiration to form the story.

A lot of the novel I am writing, is based on the song “Am I Evil” by Diamond Head, later covered by Metallica.

This gave me the frame or the idea of forming a possessed soul from childhood traumas.

My main character is based on men that I have encountered in my life. It is not a coincidence he is a musician, because I see them as a source of decadent inspiration and they do play with the souls of their fans in a certain way. But he also has many features of my husband, who kind of snapped and became violent due to traumas.

I also make it a person that does not really belong. He is kind of stuck between two worlds. His father was a nobleman and he longs for richness and wealth, but his mother was a poor gypsy girl they declared a witch for seducing his father and got burnt.

As a child he had to witness that and he runs from his corrupt cousin, who is also after the family fortune and gets raised by his gypsy relatives.

Somehow he gets in contact with a powerful and wealthy satanic elite, but the innocent sacrifices he makes on his way … No gory details, if you want to, you just have to read the book when it is finished.

Fact is you know this is a screwed character that will never repent and has chosen the path of darkness, but yet you do get attached to him. He has some kind of fatal charm you cannot refuse.

This poem is based on how his mind works.

But I also start to feel for the innocent victims around him, like his wife, who he tricks, cheats and neglects. She is actually a very kind person, somewhat his counterpart that is true and faithful, unlike her husbands evil mistresses.

Those things sometimes do get to me, but I believe telling the story and letting the characters pass by is something I must do. I lay it aside, but it keeps calling me back later somehow.

Fact is a novel or a short story is something you pen down and let go. A novel is a concept you have to stick to and maintain alive for many pages.
