Crop Images For Online Tutorials

Why do photographs need to take up half the page? It can be limited.

When doing a tutorial online, please consider options of using zoom on your photographs to enable the viewers to actually read and see what you are showing them to do. I find many are just stretching the size of the picture instead of zooming in so we can actually see it. This also gives you more space to actually write about what you are teaching, instead of pictures that are taking up half of the tutorial page, which really is not needed. Most browsers have an option for zoom. I also highly recommend you write on the photograph with arrows to indicate what you are showing them and speaking about. I find it incredibly difficult to follow an online tutorial done with photographs with these features not being used. Notice how small I made the photograph, but you can still clearly see I am showing them where the home page feature is. This way you can simply write that the home page feature is located at the top left hand side with the picture this size, zoomed in on, and written on to explain it.

Zoom Options

The IE browser has a small magnifying glass in the bottom right hand corner; it is simply a matter of clicking on the icon. You will be given a variety of percentages to choose from. The Firefox browser has a tool kit called the web developer tool kit, and zoom options are a part of that wonderful kit. Many versions of zoom software are available online for download. A free option however is available on both Firefox and IE.

 Writing on Your Photograph

You simply need to use a photo editing software. Many are available to use online, as well as for download to rest on your desktop. I use a program called Photoscape, which enables me not only to write on the photograph, but I can also take my screen shots with this program as well, which gives me more space on my hard drive instead of having other screen shot programs. You can also cut out the area of the page you are discussing, so this limits the size of the photograph. Photoscape also has a feature that allows you to take a screen shot of the region of the page, as you can see below.

Online versions of photo editing are also available; you can use lunapic to write on photographs too.

Consider using these options when trying to teach others online. You may also find that some of your viewers wear glasses or have some sort of eye condition that is not allowing them to see screen shots that are not being zoomed in on.The learning process for some, is not the same for others. Writing on the picture gives more insight to the viewer.
