Copy and Pasting Comments

An issue that has been bugging me for while. You might be a victim.

For those few on Triond who are familiar with me know that I can’t stand perfunctory comments – those short, generic and inane comments that merely show that someone had stopped by. I rather have zero comments than a hundred perfunctory ones. It’s like graffiti being sprayed upon your home. No one wants that in their neighborhood. But there is actually something much worse than perfunctory comments: copy and pasting comments.

There are certain users here on Triond who will go to a post, irrelevant of reading the actual post or not, pick and choose a comment on that post – particularly if it’s a more thoughtful one – copy and paste it, then submit it as their own. They have no shame either and are very blatant about it because of the anonymity of the Internet, hiding behind an online username. I don’t know why they would do that and could only hazard a guess or two. Too lazy to make their own comment? Can’t write English well? Another way to mark their territory?

No one is ever obligated to leave a comment. If you have nothing to say, that’s completely okay. Just don’t leave a comment. Triond and the Internet will keep on trucking. The case here is most likely that the user is only on a content site/farm just to generate revenue from their posts, trying to drive as much traffic to their posts as possible by leaving comments. But instead of creating a comment in their own words, they simply copy and paste someone else’s.

I’ve had few of my posts plagiarized before, outside of Triond. That was bad enough. But to receive a plagiarized comment? What will they think up next? Utterly shameful.

Recently, one user under the alias “lonelyplanet” has added me as a friend and left a copy and pasted comment on my post “Wet with Dew”. He/she brazenly copied AmosTheCat’s comment per verbatim. This user has done this numerous times on many other Triond posts. I’m sure many of you have been graced by lonelyplanet’s presence. I also believe this particular user has multiple accounts on Triond and have used many aliases, such as rajaryanme, travelnews and multiplenews. It’s interesting to note that the content on each of these accounts are all very similar, with posts about traveling to India and Indian tours ad nauseam. Because of this Triond user, I wrote this rant for your viewing pleasure. (Aren’t you so lucky?)

Should copy and pasting comments be a ban-worthy offense? Or should this form of plagiarism be tolerated and ignored? Let me know what you think!

Copy and paste does not bother me. I just go to the top menu in the triond account page and select
    content –> comments
    and delete them.

Some comments are thanks or whatever simple comment. Again I don’t mind these. I give them sometimes because I have nothing nice to say about the article.

Sure you can not leave a comment, but that’s how you get more views, by letting people know you were there.

Very well said Lady sunshine. These “writers” are simply annoying.

It is wrong and lazy for people to do this, if it happened to me, not that I have seen this yet, I would delete that person’s comment, if it had been copied without doubt from another person’s entry, remove them as a friend and not bother looking at their articles anymore.

Great article Lady Sunshine, Best Wishes, Chris.

Firstly Sunshine, I think this is the first article, not poetry, I’ve ever read from you, hopefully we’ll see more :-) Those comments don’t annoy me as much as the ones where someone asks me to read their page. But, I believe some people have nothing better to do on Triond than annoy others. When you see their comment, you should delete it immediately.

You have certainly expressed how you dislike those short comments. If they are genuine than there’s no problem at all.

I could not agree more with your feelings on this. I try to do my best to express my feelings on a topic or article and would never copy and past some tidbit of a comment!

Hi Lady Sunshine, it’s just so sad that some people feel they have to copy and paste a comment, you really have to feel sorry for them, poor things :)

I don’t understand why they bother to copy and paste the comment, from the same post, don’t they know the author will know, if I were them, I will rather use “nice share”, or “good article” kind of standard comments, instead of copying those which will be more obvious. Strange.

Nowadays, I also confused who is genuine, who is fake, but bear in mind, Lady, I am genuine, the one and only…. (teasing you, haha).

That is very weird. I don’t quite comprehend it. I did enjoy your article on it, though. Very well written, surprisingly, since I assumed you are not a native English writer, which is not to say you writing is not always very good. It is impressive, actually, but I especially like this one. Great humor. .

I don’t get mad at it – I just ignore it.
On the other hand, when someone is coping an entire article – that gets on my nerves!

While I prefer real comments that would show the appreciation of a reader. Every comment helps you. The comments get your work listed on the most popular sections of the different Triond sites, and that can significantly boost your views. Which could lead to more of the genuine comments we all appreciate. There’s no point in making waves in the community. The best thing you can do is just leave real comments on the articles you like and lead by example.

Thanks for making waves in the community. It’s getting to be too much like a stagnant pond. Raj Aryan aka rajaryanme is a multiple duplicate-content offender and spammer. See the responses to his questions by Nathan and Glassdesk on Get Satisfaction. Leading by example will not influence him.
