The doctor has to remain cold…

How can a doctor be all of these when telling someone bad news?
After he was shot,
the doctor told her he would die,
he let her cry,
deep, heaving moans,
heart-wrenching groans,
pain that carried fear
beyond the realm of sorrow,
her son was certain to die by tomorrow,
the doctor hated himself during times like these,
she lost it as she fell to her knees,
cold, clinical, professional,
all went out the door,
the mother cradled like an infant on the floor,
nothing else he could say,
it was such a dark day,
but he didn’t turn away,
he was struck deeply by her pain,
her terror, her strain,
he couldn’t be cold, clinical, professional,
because times like this leaves an emotional stain.

I feel the emotion in the words.

three are a lot of jobs where you have to construct a wall between your emotions and reality, being a doctor is certainly one of them. I knew one doctor who got too close to his patients and finished up getting out of the profession – good poem.

Cold is exactly how this poem left me after reading it several times. Part of being a doctor or surgeon is being able to detach from your emotions. You can still show care or empathy to someone in need, but maintaining your professionalism at all times. He would have been an asshole had he turned away but it shows that he has a heart, but the woman needed comfort. his presence was not enough, remember men are from mars and women are from venus. he was struck deeply by her pain perhaps because at that moment he felt vulnerable. He put himself in her situation and imagined what it would feel like to lose someone he loved or perhaps he already lost someone so it brought back old memories. Good work
