Can you make money on Triond, and other sites of this kind? A prospective view of one writer.
I have asked myself this age old question over and over. I’m sure that many out there have as well. Then theory sounds nice, but does it really work? The idea is sound as long as everyone concerned plays by the rules. You write an article and submit it for publication and you post your link or article so others can view it and make comments and likes or dislikes on the materials you have written. You have others Stumble or Buzz the article to as many social groups or sites in hope of getting more exposure and more money as the advertiser places links in your writings which the hungry consumer clicks on an then buys the products, making money for their company, Triond and the person that wrote the article.
I have often had to question why as a writer of well over 150 articles, have I not made much income from my articles? My articles have reached the “Top Ten List” on several occasions, but still the income is very small often not enough to make it really worth my efforts if I were to depend on it for a living. I have asked myself several times why do others articles that are of the same high quality as mine seem to stay on the first page way longer than mine? I sometimes find this very confusing so I thought I would research the question concerning this and see if I could come up with an educated guess or answer as to why this happens.
The first thing I noticed was that I was stumbling, way more of my friend’s articles then they would stumble of mine. My list of other articles to be stumble for my friends was often flooded to the point by some that I could not get to the others to stumble and review. So I fixed this by only reviewing one or two articles from the person/persons that was flooding me with articles. Then I made it clear that on most occasions I will stumble, article for article for everyone they stumbled and reviewed of mine. I know this may sound hard hearted and somewhat greedy to some, but fair is fair.
Secondly I discovered that there are niches out there that will increase your views and possible income. If you want to increase your views find a niche or places in the market that are looking for that which you write about. This can be obtained by using powerful keywords in your articles and by using tags that draw these people to your articles. An example of this would be,: “Cement Trucks”, I would not want to sell such an item to a seniors home as it would be useless to them, so instead I would consider the “Construction Industry,” as they would more readily look and purchase my products.
A good way of doing this is to use the “Hot Topics List” on the upper right hand side of your Triond site. Example: Love, Romance, Children, Family etc. and use them in the tag section of your submit an article. This has started to work for me as I found that it put my articles in the proper corner of the market to be more noticeable and it has started to draw more views from interested people. I’m also sure if we use a key word generator like ones available on search engines such as yahoo and Google that this will help place articles written automatically in the mainstream of traffic on the World Wide Web Site. (I could be wrong, but it is worth a try).
Concerning commissions, I feel they should be increased as it’s the writers that make it possible for Triond and other sites of like manner to exist and profit handsomely the way they do. Now I know there are many things that make up a site such as this that we the writers are unaware of as well as cost involved to operate such a site. Then again the age old question rare its head again, in that where would these sites be if not for the many writers that contribute their articles to them? Advertisers use sites like this as it is cost effective for them to do so and if it were not, they would not use them. This said, let move on and up.
Although I have a few questions and answers of my own as can be seen by reading this article, I still feel Triond and other sites like this are a great spring board to recognition and success of the up and coming writers as well as for the professional writers, in that it helps the writer expand and build the writing skills and creates a following along the way. The experience that is gained by being a working part of sites such as this opens new doors into many worlds and even in the direction of self publishing for some such as myself. So this may be something to think about for those serious writers out there. We have a lot of great writers on Triond and an extended family on Stumble Upon, that makes it worth the while as many of us would not know one another if not for joining and posting our articles here or on other sites like this one.
Advertising is a multi trillion dollar industry and it is very easy to start up sites like these as this is the power of using and building search engines. Advertisers will go with the best cost effective programs out there and sites like Triond and the others that are readily available give them exactly what they need, “More Bang” for their advertising dollars. The writers supply the materials in which the advertisers can place links to their products; the key words in the articles allow the search engines to target the many niches out there. This in turn brings income to them, the writers and the sites they place their articles on.
I am not an expert when it comes to any of this and for me it can be very confusing as I have yet to fully understand how all this works. I invite Triond, and you the reader to enlighten me on this subject with your comments as well as make sure if you like an article to click on the “I like”, button. People tend to stumble stuff but not do this. Thank you for your ongoing support of my many articles on here and I hope for the continued support of Triond and my many readers.

Great article! I couldn’t agree with you more. Lots of helpful information. Your points are all very true. Thanks for sharing, friend!
God bless.

Excellent article. I don’t know much about advertising my work. I haven’t really looked into it. Maybe I’ll do it in the future but right now all I want to do is get better at my writing.

Great article. Good points
January 18th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Yes! I was stumbled and all of sudden, I was flooded with clicks, have 67,000 in three days on that one article and counting! Feels like Christmas!
Well written! Check out the Stumble Uponers Group in the triond forum.
January 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Thank you for your thoughtful, honest article. I see Triond as a long-term investment. Over the 2 years that I’ve been writing for this site… my earnings have increased. As your viewings continue to grow consistently – the limits are endless.
Blessings.
Sincerely,
-Liane Schmidt.

Great article! These are questions that most of us probably have. I’ve just started using stumbleupon and it seems to be helping a little … the most clicks I’ve gotten on anything I’ve written though is only about 130. I’ve almost earned enough (total) with all my postings to buy a gallon of gas.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I think that reading others articles and making worthwhile comments, not just “great job” or whatever is as important as writing quality articles. In these times of economic uncertainty, every little bit of extra money helps. I definitely wouldn’t quit my day job to publish here full time.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Some very good points here that others should note.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Very informative.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Interesting article and a useful perspective on marketing articles. There are many other ways to market articles besides Stumbleupon. I think that many people think it’s the only way that works.
I agree with Paula Mitchell Bentley in principle. However, I add ‘good article’, ‘great job’, or something similar when I am unimpressed, or I have nothing good to add. I don’t believe there is any mileage in being critical.
January 18th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
your article will be of great interest to other writers out there. thnx for sharing.
January 18th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Great article. Very informative and points out many issues. This to me is a critical article for writers to check out such as myself as well as many others. Very beneficial. Nice read.
January 18th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
interesting points here, thanks much and congrats for a job well done
January 18th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
You have right. It’s very hard to make a living only with earnings from Triond. I liked the point where you said about raising our royalties because we are the actual money bringers in the site but they surely have expenses like paying their personel, hosting etc.
I clicked I like it because it was a great article in my opinion!
January 18th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I’ve only been writing on Trinod for two months now and all I’ve really made is friends. Thank you for writing this article. It addresses questions a lot of us have. If you find the answers, can you publish them for us?
January 18th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
A very insightful article Namaste. I like your points.
January 18th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Wow! I am sending my first article to TRIOND. No expectations to get rich at once, but you have called the attention to relevant topics of general interest. Please, give us more from your curiosity, and maybe TRIOND understands we need answers to calm down our common inquietudes.
January 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
HI, like this artiacle very much..there are ways to promote your stuff it just takes time to get it and post it.
January 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I don’t ask for others to stumble me, but on occasion have been extremely impressed with something and bookmarked it. This was not out of obligation but bestowing honor. Truthfully I am so busy, I do not bookmark my own most the time, and try in earnest to read and rate. I lost my stumble tool bar again when my computer crashed (again). I am still trying to catch up where I can do some research and add content. I lost the articles I was working on also.
It is selfish for someone to shift their workload on another. You are right to draw the line, and have much talent as a writer. Keep writing. If nothing else, it keeps us sane.
Take care & G♥d bless.
January 18th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
This is an article that must be in the mind and heart of all of us at Triond. I also have felt confusion, discouraged, and at times a little exasperated…but only when I look at the short term and not the long term Like Liane stated, think of it as an investment. If I could not see how over years of writing my income would increase I would seek another avenue. But I believe in time what I have published with Triond will be my “bread and butter” money while I work on larger works like novels and books. This was an excellent article. I will have to read more of your content.
January 18th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
TRIOND is my my first on-line writing opportunity.
Thanks everyone who has read and commented on my articles…
and, this is a great article.

Namaste and Creator’s Blessings to all. I want to thank everyone that has taken the time to read, review and comment on my articles here on triond. I am also very grateful for all the encouragement and great advice along the way. We are a community of writers let us always support each other and to also always encourage all when it is needed.

Become writer is only one of occupations in this world!
January 18th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
I mean becoming a writer is only one of occupations in this world! So, why must we force ourselves to become a writer if our sites pay us low?
January 18th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Good article.
January 18th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Interesting information. I wish I had an answer for your questions. I work and work and market my stories and still I don’t make very much income. I work at least 10 to 15 hours a week at writing, marketing my articles, plus my other job and try to have a life. It takes up a lot of time. Sometimes I don’t feel I get out of it what I put in.
January 18th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Great! Thanks for representing us who share the same feeling.
January 19th, 2009 at 1:35 am
Very helpful.. doing it with those key words in the hot list is new to me.. adv.your articles is again one of the key thing !!
January 19th, 2009 at 2:06 am
So many writers! I am friends with only about half a dozen people on Triond but Triond friends with hundreds, and such is the traffic I get that sometimes I don’t even see the articles of those in whom I am really interested, lost as they are in the traffic. So apologies for that folks!
As for SU, once you have made friends there, they are able to send you as many pages as they wish (thats the friend deal there!) and occasionally, when I log on to SU I rue the day I clicked that pesky confirm button as there can be around 50 articles that people want – no, expect – me to stumble and review!
I send a lot out on SU and if I demanded that people did the thumbs up or reviewed everything then it wouldn’t get me far! I try to write broadly but my chosen topics are not for everyone. Plus I like to stumble stuff other than Triond work!
However, each view, whether or not it is reviewed on SU, does get a click on Triond. As a heavy sender on SU I take that in to account – at least – and expect those who think I send them too much to unfriend me and unsubscribe from my pages. There would be no ill feeling if they were to do that – why should there be?
Often I find I don’t particularly like the articles I am sent and so just click through it. It isn’t either a critique or an insult, however, it is just that when I am on SU I am not on Triond – I am a Stumbler! So I only stumble the stuff I believe that others on the SU community (specifically the bulk of my SU friends who are not Trionders!) would like. Otherwise they will just give up on me eventually and unfriend me.
SU is not the only source of page click thrus and it is by no means the best. My best and biggest hits have come through Digg and reddit.
Have I gone off subject? Sorry if I have – very early in the morning here! We must remember tho that those sites that we use to market our own work have their own agenda and we must comply with that!

Thank you for the input Rj Evans it isb always appreiciated my friend. Your advice and comments are always welcomed my friend.
January 19th, 2009 at 2:54 am
To a new Triond writer this is extremely useful advice, especially the hot tags; it’s really good to see how open and helpful everyone is on here. Thanks for the article.
January 19th, 2009 at 2:58 am
Very good, useful and helpful article!
January 19th, 2009 at 4:50 am
Thank you for this wonderful and enlightening article. You have answered so many of my own questions.
January 19th, 2009 at 6:06 am
A very informative and helpful article. I am feeling a little exasperated at the moment because despite writing more, and having lots of comments my income this month is half what it was last month. I don’t understand it even though I know it is based on advertising. Perhaps it is because I write poetry and not articles. Thank you for enlightening me on other issues.

Yes, this stuff always confuses me so I just try to write for the fun of it and if I make some money it’s just a bonus to me. Your article is very helpful though and many of us appreciate it!
January 19th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Ijust started at Triond . I have five articles published now and have made a total of .04 cents so far not very encouraging .I don’t have many friends on the site as of yet either .When I came across your article I just had to read it ! You made so much sense and I believe you are a very good writer. You are trying to help all of us who are struggling along .I really thought your points made sense .I hope you write more on this I will be watching for it.
January 19th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I thought it was a great article, I have only a handful of articles on Triond at the moment but I’ll definitely use some of your tips in future articles.
January 19th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Thanks for the advice and guidelines!

Tag word generators such as Google Tag Word Generator has increased one of my articles to an average of 350 views per month. I am positive it could be more with a little extra effort.
I am guilty sometimes of being lazy and asking more from writers than giving in return. For this I truly apologize to all my friends. I have been more concious of trying to make it an even trade off. I have made such wonderful friends here at triond and now I have met more friends with stumble and Digg. Thanks for sharing your tips with us!
January 19th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Wow thanks im new and totally lost ive submitted only one poem/article and havent made anything yet i didnt know that I had to advertise it.. its too much work though, and I wont make as much as i need so im still continuing to job hunt.
January 19th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
I think you make a very good point and wrote this well.
I also think that it takes a lot of effort & writing experience to get popular on this website. You have to write about something that people actually want to read and have a reason for writing it.
January 19th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Thanks for the article, as a new Triond writer I am still unsure where my 6 cents has come from, and how to increase in that number.

Excellent tips my friend. It is so important, as RJ said to SU, digg, and use other resources to market yourself. If you think that publishing an article and just letting it sit will get you views , you are mistaken.
As soon as you publish you should be the first person to SU, digg, and share it within 10 to 15 mins of publication.
Unless your article has made it to at least 3 to 4 social sites in one day, you need to work harder and faster.
January 19th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Yes, just like most of the others, you voiced my thoughts. Although I admit to such a grand ego that I’m sure that millions of people are just waiting to read my stuff, if only they knew!
Seriously though, I don’t believe that Triond or anywhere else can really make money, I’ve seen reports of Youtube people who got millions of hits and still didn’t make much money. I say enjoy and link and stumble and digg and if you really really are determined to make money, start a website, link like crazy, get discovered so people actually show up and advertise like heck.
January 19th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Interesting article. The title caught my attention while surfing articles to read. Still learning how to earn money with Triond so I found the information enlightening and helpful. I do not get many readers though I do much reading myself. Thanks for the insight.
January 19th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Hi Quail, long time no hear. Um I actually agree with most of the points you make in this piece. My articles have reached the Hot Content on a handful of occasions and like you have not stayed long due to some of the same factors. However, a number of articles which have not made the top 10 have reached over 10,000 views and made me the most profit. This has happened sometimes weeks after they were published. I must say that since I started at Triond in April 08, my views and profits have steadily increased but the profits are still petty cash which makes it hard to believe that you could make a living from content published on the net. However, profit not why I write. I should publish this! Haha. Have a good one. RJ

January 19th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Great research, I like it!
January 19th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
This is a great subject. I myself have not made much money here. But, I have come to love the place in spite of that. There are a lot of great articles here and even more great writers. I have made lots of friends and writing is not just about the money, it’s about loving what you do. I really do hope that Louie Jerome hasn’t put “great job” or “good article” on anything of mine and didn’t mean it. I would just rather that she didn’t put anything at all if she can’t be honest with me or anyone else here. I think this cheats people. They don’t know it when they need to improve on their writing. I am sure that even I do need to myself. If anyone reads this comment, all I ask is that you be honest with me when reading my work. Criticism is good when it comes to the art of constructive self-improvement. Don’t be afraid to tell the truth. Anyone who is a professional writer or wants to be, knows that going into this business, you are not going to make everyone who reads your work happy. That’s just the way it is.
January 19th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
good..really nice
January 19th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
Great, encouraging article! I found it to be very helpful.
January 19th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
R J Evans has said it best already, because I was going to press on some of his same points, but it is not important to do so now. There are several other writers that I have met since starting out on Triond that both new and veteran writers can learn quite a lot from their experience and proven track-records on Triond. I will usually always have time to answer my friends’ questions to the best of my ability and if I am unable to give an answer, then there are plenty of other experienced writers and promoters that can be found in the Triond Forum Groups standing at the ready to answer the questions that we most often have pondered.
God Bless,

This is indeed a great article with helpful information. Now if only someone would tell us how to put the links in to our other artcles that would also be helpful. I am not very computer knowledgeable. (or is it knowledgible?) Anyway, I really would like to know how to insert the links to other works in my poems and other things that I write, but don’t have clue. It is good that I’m not here just to make money as I haven’t even made a full dollar yet and have been here since October or November. Still in all fairness I did leave to try out another site for a little while before coming back. I am glad that I read this, and I hope I catch it if you post another about anything like it.

Great article, Let’s see where it goes? Should be interesting.
January 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I just left a long comment which vaporized when I hit “post.” One more reason triond makes me nuts!!! The site itself is not encouraging or supportive of writers. Why do we have to jump through hoops to leave a silly comment????
I loved the article. I have written here but not as much as on other sites because, unlike HubPages, it is not a friendly site. Writers don’t respond to my articles even when I respond to theirs. I think the site should pay more since, as your article stated, we are the backbone of the site.
And, we should be notified if comments are left for us or if a favorite author publishes something new.
Excellent article

Nice article, I am really motivated to get into writing more often on triond. Thanks for sharing your experience with others, and of course, me. I have a query, can you please tell me how one makes money on this site, is it pages viewed or is there any upfront payment for the articles? please tell me, I would be glad to hear from you.
January 20th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
This is an interesting informative article. I am working harder at promoting and changing direction this year, it has paid off so far.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Outstanding article that poses probably the most popular question, money. I have been on Triond for almost a year. I have also been part of a writing school for about five. Quite honestly, if you really want to make good money as a freelance writer you need to get into print magazines, which is NOT easy. However, that’s where the good pay is. Magazines pay anywhere from $25 to hundreds of dollas an article. But, you have to establish yourself with a solid resume of writing, which Triond can be used for. As you state, Triond is an OUTSTANDING forum to build a fan base, network, learn, meet wonderful people and hone your craft. Unless you have hundreds perhaps thousands of articles out there that constantly hit the HOT list, the best way to make money in writing is through print. I haven’t even gotten myself there yet, but I keep trying. Hang in there! Thanks for a great article!

I appreciate tips and might look into stumble upon. My earnings are not worth mentioning but hay, I love my own writing. I also have a blog that is a very lonely place. lol! I have had two readers and one turned out to be verbally dangerous. I enjoy Triond simply because so many of you are great writers and brighten my days when I have time.

Hi great article, You are correct, You will never earn a great deal on Triond, $5 to $10 a month is going good. You need to think about titles that are going to get to the top of the google search engine. Read my article for a more information. Hope this helps.

x Thanks.
Its so hard promoting your articles anyone have any ideas?

Great Article btw!

I just discovered this website and was curious as to what its all about. Making money, you say? Of course, I’m there, count me in! However, I take particular note to Nutuba’s comment above . . . 130 hits and only enough money for a tank of gas? So, the key is, to write something . . . interesting. . .that appeals to a LOT of readers. . .and then you get a LOT of hits. . .and you make a LITTLE BIT of money? Is this correct?
Very curious and awaiting replies.

Very well done, it is really hard trying to come across as a serious writer, and as I am so new here I am only starting to begin to see the pros and cons of this site but I found this article very informative and helpful ty…

Very well done my friend. Some excellent keyword ideas here. Personally, I have cut back on my use of SU and Digg, due to time constraints and because of the very reasons that you mention. I have been far too overwhelmed from some people sending me way too many items. I really like the sites but it’s just too much!
Anyway, love the article. Keep up the good work!

It’s good to write as often as you can. This will only help you to get better as a writer. I also have a theory about making money. Most people believe that pennies are worthless yet the more you have of them the more they count. For instance, say you have one billion pennies given to you, what does that add up to? Just remove two zeros from the amount of pennies stated and you have dollars, so one billion pennies equals ten million dollars, right? What if you published one billion articles and each only brought you a penny? Would you be able to say that was profitable? All I can say is don’t give up, keep writing when you can, and learn as much as you can along the way. There’s money to be made. Keep up your research as to how to promote your articles, you can only profit from your efforts.

http://www.triond.com/users/Clayton+Waley; I am fairly new myself, and have been spending time doing research on the promotional part of writing. When I get it all figured out, I think I’ll write an article about that.

A very interesting article – some of which I shall be trying to put into practice. However can anybody out there fill me in a little on stumbling and what the Stumble site is all about??? I have signed up with it but don;t seem to be able to understand much about getting my work on thee. Am I being a bit dopy and missing something?
Best wishes.

Nice article. I had 4 articles published and spent about 4 hrs working on them, total. I’ve come to the realization that this is probably not a wise use of my time. I could be writing and trying to get pub’d by “real publications” who will pay me for what my time is really worth. Triond is now just a place for me to see what others come up with that might be interesting or for me to vent, but not put any real effort into creativity. But good luck to anyone that sees it as a good avenue of income, cuz I don’t.

why is my email address showing on here?

So basically, not only do you not earn any money, they do actually show your email address when they say they won’t! I’m waiting for them to show my username and password now too!

Great article and lots of nice replies. I try to include all tag words that I can think of out of my articles, but I know something I miss some. I like the new thing that triond just started with the keyword/tag helper.
