A New Writer on the Market, in a World of Rejections

Being a new writer is hard, but a few simple tips to help you along the way to build up your profile.

Ok, so I have no portfolio, I have no previously published articles and no background what-so-ever in the publishing business. Would someone please just at least have a read of what I’ve got to say?

Being a new writer on the market isn’t easy. Well, don’t we all know that? Entering the writing business is like stepping back to your first job out of school. Show me your resume the boss says. What other experiences other than studying have you got?

Accepting rejections is part of any writer’s life. Although, rejections after rejections do make one wonder, maybe I am just not meant to be a writer?

Well, as they all say; if there isn’t a way, then make a way.

I find that if no one wants to publish your articles, publish it yourself. In this world of rejections, you know there is one person that will never reject you – YOU. We have plenty of technology available these days for self-publishing. You don’t need to go out there and spend the money to print off books that will perhaps never sell. Why not try blogging? Or join a virtual writer’s network? Just like any other job, writing is also partly about who you know. Blogging makes a great way to make friends among fellow bloggers and there is at least one person who will know where to get publishing help. Websites such as Orble or BlogSpot makes it so easy to set up an account you don’t even need to be technically savvy. All you need is an internet connection and a big commitment to your own blog.

One of the best tips I ever received from my lecturer on writing is to write everyday, and guess what? Blogging forces you to do so. To be successful, you need to be persistent about the blog, think of new topics to write about, or an old topic with a new twist. Keep your readers interested and introduce some of your own original ideas everyday. Making sure there is a post a day ensures a steady readership as well as trains you with deadlines.

You never know with the ever growing World Wide Web who might just be reading your blog!

Another tip I’ve been given about building up a writing profile, is by entering competitions. There are hundreds of writing competitions world wide, and most welcome international entrants. Reading past competition entries also gives you an idea of the standard of writing required and may even just improve your style of writing. Once you’ve earned a title from a competition, you are then able to put that on your profile and even if it’s not officially published, it is also part of your achievements.

Not all of us can be J.R. Rowling, and require immense efforts to stand out among the writers in the world. After putting passion, time and effort into the bowl, the last ingredient you need is for you to start writing.
