Summary of Flower Myth Adonis

Flower Myth Part 3. This taken is from the book of Edith Hamilton. This is my younger sister’s assignment.

The story of Adonis was the most famous among those of the three flowers.

Even when Adonis was born, the Goddess of Love and Beauty already loved him. Her name was Aphrodite. She took the baby and brought to the underworld. She asked Persephone (the Queen of the Dead) to take care of him.

When Aphrodite came back to get Adonis, Persephone would not give him back because she also loved Adonis. Since they could not decide by themselves, Zeus finally intervened.

Zeus decided that Adonis should spend half of the year with each. During autumn and winter, he would be with Persephone. While during spring and summer, he would be with Aphrodite.

While with Aphrodite, Apollo would usually chase with her through the air and the woodland ways. Apollo was so good. He would even leave her behind riding on her swan-drawn.

One day when she was not with him, he tracked a boar (wild pig). He stubbed the boar with his spear. But the boar was so strong. Adonis only wounded it. Then the boar came back to him and stubbed him with its big tusks.

Aphrodite heard him in pain. She drove fast using her winged car to him. She was in great pain. And she could no longer help him. She kissed him and spoke to him. But he could no longer hear any of her words. He was already dead.

The crimson flowers (blood-colored flowers) grew at the spots where Adonis’ blood had dropped.
